Contact: Shelly Figueroa, Coordinator, Education and Outreach WXXI’s goal for the outreach campaign for The War That Made America is to reinforce to viewers and students that the French and Indian War was both a turning point in our nation’s history as well as an event that shaped the lives of people in upper New York State and nearby Canadian regions. WXXI will conduct a daylong educator’sworkshop for middle and high school social studies teachers, co-hosted by the Rochester Area Council for Social Studies. The workshop includes screening a clip from the series and a lecture and discussion led by a local history expert. The training will prepare teachers to use the series and materials effectively with students. The station will produce educational programming (four, 3-4 minute segments) to demonstrate local involvement in the French and Indian War and will broadcast them statewide as part of Homework Hotline’s “New York State of Mine” feature in January 2006. The segments will be shot at Old Fort Niagara, which played an important role in the struggles to control the Great Lakes region during the War. They will also be streamed on the project Web site and as part of the station’s school video-on-demand service. |
