WVPT’s goal for the outreach campaign for The War That Made America is to increase the knowledge and awareness of the French and Indian War and its impact on Virginia’s history.
The station is partnering with Shenandoah University to produce two 30-minuteprograms that combine studio interviews with existing French and Indian War footage and clips. The first program was broadcast on November 14, 2005 and explored the role Virginian’s played in the War. The second program will air in mid-January and will address the effect of the War on Virginia frontier settlements.
WVPT and the University have organized lectures for middle and high school students and training for teachers, including distribution of the Educator’s Guide. The station has also produced Virginia War Minutes to broadcast around the series and printed thousands of postcards for dissemination to promote the series. They have created a Web page on the station site and will link it to the PBS project Web site.
